The Ekiti State Police Command has cautioned motorists, motorcycle riders and other road users against reckless driving and violation of traffic regulations ahead of the yuletide season.
The command gave the warning in a statement issued on Monday in Ado-Ekiti by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday.
It expressed concern over the increasing number of reported road traffic accidents across the state, particularly in Ado-Ekiti, some of which had resulted in deaths and serious injuries.
The command attributed the accidents to reckless and careless driving, excessive speeding, impatience, disobedience to traffic regulations, disregard for traffic lights and other dangerous driving practices.
It noted that the yuletide season was usually characterised by increased vehicular movement and commercial activities, requiring motorists and other road users to exercise greater caution and responsibility.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Falade Adegoroye Michael, urged road users to prioritise safety over speed and convenience, stressing that no journey was worth the loss of a life.
He advised motorists and motorcycle riders to obey traffic rules and signals, avoid reckless overtaking and dangerous manoeuvres, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.
The commissioner also urged drivers and motorcycle riders to possess valid driving licences, ensure their vehicles were roadworthy, avoid overloading and distractions, and use appropriate safety equipment, including seat belts and approved crash helmets.
He further called on road users to exercise patience, remain alert and respect pedestrians to prevent avoidable accidents.
The statement said the command would intensify traffic patrols, visibility policing and enforcement of relevant traffic laws in collaboration with appropriate traffic management agencies.
It warned that anyone found violating applicable traffic regulations would face the full weight of the law.
The command also urged members of the public to promptly report traffic violations, emergencies and other activities threatening public safety to the nearest police station or through 08062335577.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring safer roads for residents and visitors throughout the festive season and beyond.
