A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Dr Omolola Alao, has emerged as the new president of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Ekiti State Chapter.

Alao’s emergence was announced during the association’s Fourth Annual Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting held in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday. The event also featured the inauguration of the new executive committee and the presentation of awards to distinguished personalities for their contributions to healthcare delivery and professional development.

The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Prof. Olayemi Oyebanji, received the Outstanding Champion of Women’s and Children’s Health Award, while the State Head of Service, Dr Olufolakemi Olomojobi, received the Foundational Legacy Award. The Permanent Secretary of the State Hospital Management Board, Dr Kanmi Alabi, received the Institutional Development Award, while the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dr Ukehmigbewon Famewo, was honoured with the Distinguished Award of Meritorious Service. A Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Olubukola Ojo, received the Excellence in Service Award.

The outgoing president, Dr Bolade Dele-Ojo, said the association had carried out several interventions to improve healthcare delivery, including school outreaches, menstrual hygiene campaigns, blood pressure screening, cardiovascular risk assessments, cancer awareness programmes and free medical check-ups.

She listed Ado-Ekiti, Orun-Ekiti, Osin-Ekiti and Osi-Ekiti among the communities that benefited from medical outreaches organised in partnership with other organisations. She urged members to strengthen professional relationships, promote accountability, nurture future leaders and sustain meaningful service to society.

The conference also featured a quiz competition among three schools, with Divine Touch International School emerging winner, followed by Christ School and Harding Memorial School in second and third positions, respectively.

The scientific conference, themed “Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence: Balancing Innovation and Ethics,” examined the responsible adoption of technology in healthcare, while the sub-theme, “From Career to Personal Identity: My Strategic Exit Plan,” highlighted the importance of preparing for life beyond formal professional appointments.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the AGM Planning Committee, Dr Oluwakemi Ojulowo, said the meeting provided an opportunity for members to exchange knowledge, assess the association’s activities and strengthen professional relationships.
