The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ekiti State Chapter, has raised concern over child marriage, warning that the practice threatens girls’ education, health, personal development and future opportunities.

The association made this known in a statement commemorating the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, jointly signed by its Chairperson, Adewumi Ademiju, and Secretary, Funmi Falae.

Ademiju emphasised that child marriage could deprive girls of quality education, expose them to health complications associated with early pregnancy and childbirth and limit their ability to become economically independent and contribute meaningfully to society.

She said, “Every girl child deserves the opportunity to discover her abilities, pursue her dreams and achieve her full potential. Early marriage can interrupt a girl’s education, restrict her choices and expose her to serious health and social challenges. We must create an environment where girls are encouraged to complete their education, develop their talents and aspire to become whatever they desire.”

The NAWOJ chairperson noted that the consequences of child marriage extend beyond the individual girl, affecting families and society through reduced educational attainment, limited economic opportunities and the loss of valuable human potential.

She called on parents and guardians to support their daughters’ aspirations and ensure that financial difficulties, cultural expectations or other social pressures do not force them into premature marriage.

NAWOJ urged government to enforce child protection laws and improve access to education, while calling on community leaders and the media to raise awareness about child marriage and promote girls’ rights.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating the protection and empowerment of women and girls, stressing that investing in girls’ education, health and personal development would contribute to stronger families and a more prosperous society.
