The Ekiti State Police Command has commenced statewide enforcement of traffic laws, arresting vehicles found violating traffic regulations.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abutu Sunday, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, saying the exercise was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
According to him, the enforcement targets motorists and other road users who violate traffic laws, including driving without valid vehicle particulars, disobeying traffic signs, reckless driving and illegal parking.
He said the offences were capable of endangering lives, causing road crashes and obstructing the free flow of traffic.
Sunday said vehicles found wanting had been arrested, with appropriate enforcement measures taken in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegboreoye Michael, urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators and motorcycle riders to ensure that their vehicle and operational documents were valid and up-to-date.
Adegboreoye also advised road users to obey traffic signs, road markings and traffic lights, observe speed limits and avoid reckless or dangerous driving and riding.
He said the exercise was not aimed at harassing law-abiding citizens but at promoting discipline, preventing avoidable crashes and protecting lives and property.
The CP directed officers participating in the exercise to remain professional, civil, firm and fair, while respecting the fundamental rights and dignity of members of the public.
He warned that the command had zero tolerance for extortion, harassment, abuse of power or misconduct by personnel, adding that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary action.
The command appealed to residents and all road users to cooperate with the enforcement exercise, stressing that compliance with traffic laws was essential to saving lives and making Ekiti roads safer for all.
