The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Olatunji Disu, has deployed CP Abayomi Shogunle to Ekiti State to oversee security operations for the governorship election scheduled for June 20.
This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ekiti State Command, SP Sunday Abutu.
According to the statement, the deployment is part of the strategic policing measures approved by the IGP to ensure adequate security and a peaceful, violence-free electoral process in the state.
The command said that upon his assumption of duty, Shogunle immediately strengthened the implementation of the IGP’s election security protocols through enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies and key election stakeholders.
It stated that the measures include intelligence gathering to prevent political violence, anti-thuggery and anti-cultism operations, counter-misinformation campaigns, as well as security planning for the movement of electoral materials and personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The statement added that a centralised operational framework had been established to coordinate rapid response and effective deployment of security personnel across the state.
It noted that security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) would jointly secure polling units, collation centres, election facilities, voters, electoral officials, observers, journalists and critical infrastructure during the election.
Shogunle said adequate security personnel had been strategically deployed to identified flashpoints across the state to forestall any breach of peace and ensure a hitch-free electoral process.
He assured residents that officers deployed for election duties had been adequately briefed and would conduct themselves professionally in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.
The commissioner appealed to political parties, candidates, community leaders and residents of the state to cooperate with security agencies before, during and after the election.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the protection of lives and property as well as the conduct of a free, fair and credible election in Ekiti State.
The statement described Shogunle, a fellow of the Security Institute, as an experienced officer with proven expertise in strategic security operations and election security management.
It recalled that he successfully coordinated security operations during the peaceful governorship election conducted in Anambra State in November 2025.
The command urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency line, 08062335577.
