……..Ekiti FIDA Condemns the act, calls for prosecution

A pregnant woman, identified as Chineye Nwangaraya will face prosecution for alleged assault and child abuse in Ekiti State.

Nwangaraya was arrested on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti following a tip-off by concerned residents for allegedly maltreating a 9-year-old girl, Benita Gabriel who had been entrusted to her care by the child’s mother.

The swift intervention of key stakeholders including International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Gender Desk of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ministry of Women Affairs and Office of Public Defender, led to the arrest of Nwangaraya.

It was gathered that the pregnant woman, who had initially promised to look after the girl, allegedly subjected the child to severe abuse.

Further reports alleged that the victim was frequently beaten by the pregnant mother of three since January 2024 and made to carry heavy buckets of water which tragically broke the girl’s arm during one of the episodes of maltreatment.

Reacting, Chairperson of FIDA Ekiti Branch, Mrs Ayobami Olowoyo-Richards strongly condemned the inhumane treatment and cruel actions of the perpetrator while seeking an urgent need to protect children’s rights towards ensuring justice for victims of abuse.

The FIDA Chairperson, who disclosed that the child is currently receiving medical attention said the perpetrator will face prosecution for violating the Child Rights Law of Ekiti State.
