The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council has called for the immediate release of the General Manager, Our People’s FM, Yemi Agbeleoba who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged sexual harassment case at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.

Agbeleoba was accused of breaching the peace of FUOYE through a WhatsApp group, which according to the Union, was “an attempt to cover up the sexual case of the VC.”

Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, the chairman of the Union, Kayode Babatuyi condemned the arrest, describing it as a violation and an infringement on the constitutional rights of the victim.

He noted that the Union has been protecting the image of the University but would not hesitate to take drastic actions against any institution or individual attempting to harass and victimize members of the council.

Ekiti NUJ Chair called on the management of the University and DSS to release Yemi Agbeleoba with immediate effect.

Babatuyi urged DSS to follow up on the sexual scandal involving FUOYE’s VC and stop chasing shadow, adding that the Union would not also hesitate to black out every activities of the university.

His words, “The situation is connected to the current sexual saga involving the VC of FUOYE. We call on the management of FUOYE and DSS to release him with immediate effect.

“We totally condemn the arrest of Yemi Agbeleoba, it’s unnecessary and it’s an attempt to victimize and cover the alleged sexual scandal involving the Vice Chancellor.

“We called on the state government to act on this. We have been protecting the image of the university; it’s disheartening to see this over a frivolous matter.

“The current leadership of NUJ will not tolerate harassment and victimization of our member. Arresting him is unnecessary and we need to consider the interest of the family of Yemi Agbeleoba, the family has been put into trauma.

“The security agent need to follow up on the case on ground rather than chasing shadow. Yemi Agbeleoba should be released before the end of today”, the NUJ Chairman said.
