The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has urged transporters and traders in the state not to capitalise on the fuel price hike to exploit residents of Ekiti.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of March Congress of the union held on March 24, 2026, where members deliberated on pressing economic and social issues affecting the state and the nation.

The Congress, in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi and signed by his Secretary, O’seun Ogunsakin expressed concern over the ripple effects of the fuel price increase on the cost of living.

The Congress warned transporters and traders against arbitrarily increasing fares and prices of goods, noting that such actions would further compound the hardship faced by residents.

The Congress stressed that while the hike in fuel price may have triggered adjustments in operational costs, it urged the state government, under the leadership of Governor Biodun Oyebanji to urgently roll out palliative measures to cushion the adverse effects of the fuel price increase, particularly on workers and other vulnerable groups.

The Communiqué reads, “In view of the hike in price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly called Petrol, the Congress called on transporters and traders not to take undue advantage of the hike by increasing costs of fare and goods.

“The Congress also called on the Government to provide palliatives to cushion the effects of the fuel price hike on the residents, particularly workers.

“It called on security agencies in the State to redouble their efforts through proper and timely surveillance to curtail insecurity.

“As the State prepares for the forthcoming gubernatorial election, the Council urged politicians to play by the rules while residents should equally conduct themselves peacefully before during and after the June 20 election.

“The Congress implored the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure conduct of free and fair elections on the 20th of June, 2026.

“The Congress engaged the chairman of Ado Central LCDA, Engr. Toyin Ojo who gave an account of his stewardship. The Congress commended the giant strides of the Engr Ojo-led administration for redefining governance as service in the Council area.

“It appreciated Engr Toyin Ojo for pledging to provide the Ekiti NUJ Secretariat with a borehole.

“The Congress appealed to the State Government and other well spirited individuals to provide support for the proposed NUJ Press Centre project”.
