The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to tackling sexual harassment in tertiary institutions, saying perpetrators must be held accountable to protect students and uphold the integrity of higher education.
Oyebanji gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving the management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), led by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, at her office in Ado-Ekiti.
She said sexual harassment should never be treated with levity, warning that failure to sanction offenders would only encourage similar acts and endanger students.
The governor’s wife commended the university’s management for measures taken to curb sexual harassment and promote a safer learning environment for students.
She disclosed plans to organise a statewide gender summit and embark on advocacy visits to tertiary institutions to strengthen the campaign against gender-based violence.
According to her, the initiative will educate students, lecturers and other stakeholders on moral values, gender rights and the legal consequences of sexual harassment and related offences.
Earlier, Ogunwole commended the governor’s wife for her contributions to women and child development and described the Biodun Oyebanji administration as one providing purposeful leadership for the state.
He said the prevailing peace and stability in Ekiti had created an enabling environment for growth and development, adding that the administration’s achievements deserved commendation.
The vice-chancellor also lauded the Widows, Aged and Orphans Hope (WAOH) Foundation for improving the welfare of vulnerable women and girls and promoting girl-child education through its interventions.
Ogunwole further announced that FUOYE’s 11th Convocation Ceremony would hold in February 2027, adding that the university’s Senate had approved Oyebanji as the Convocation Lecturer in recognition of her humanitarian service, women empowerment and contributions to social development.
