  • As Figure of Successful Kidney Transplant Surgeries at Afe Babalola Varsity Hospital Increase to 31

Ado-Ekiti, Aug 30, 2025,

The ultra-modern 400-bed Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital, (AMSH), Ado-Ekiti at the weekend announced that it has recorded significant progress in its Renal Transplant programme.

Chief Medical Director, (CMD) of the globally recognised Hospital, Dr. Akinola Akinmade, who made this known at a media conference, held at the facility said the figure had risen to a total of 31, when added to five fresh surgeries, done successfully in the past weeks.

According to him, all the surgeries were achieved with a 100% success rate, medically, as done in other corresponding high-profile medical facilities across the globe.

He noted the breakthroughs was an indication of the fact that with strong determination and commitment, nothing is unachievable for Nigeria and Nigerians.

Though he attributed the feats to the cross-border partnership which AMSH entered into with Marengo Asia Hospitals Group, the efforts are already yielding positive dividends towards ensuring continuity in sustainable results even after the foreign experts, currently transferring expertise to Nigerian national staff in the hospital, might have left after their contract terms and period.

He said beyond the international collaboration, the hospital continues to make conscious efforts to build Nigerian capacity.

His words: “A prime example in this is our Open-Heart Surgery Programme, which began with the support of expatriate teams, but has since transitioned to being managed entirely by Nigerian professionals”.

Continuing, he added: “This achievement is a proof that with the right environment and opportunities, Nigerian Doctors, Nurses, and Allied Health workers, can perform at the highest global standards.

“In addition to transplant services, our Renal Centre is equipped with 17 modern dialysis machines, including dedicated machines for patients with infectious conditions such as hepatitis and similar ailments.

The centre currently conducts an average of 400 dialysis treatment sessions each month, making it one of the busiest and most comprehensive dialysis programs in the country.”

Akinmade stressed that in recognition of their shared success and the enabling environment provided by ABUAD, the Marengo Asia team had also expressed strong interest in expanding their services into endourological surgeries among several other areas seen as difficult by the public.

He therefore charged governments at all levels in Nigeria to improve their commitment into the health sector, saying there must be deliberate investment for a conducive working environment and attractive welfare package as done by the founder Chancellor of ABUAD and AMSH, Aare Afe Babalola, (SAN), who he said has raised the bar of salaries and other packages, even beyond the bar, set by the Federal Government.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, commended AMSH for always leading in medical breakthroughs in Nigeria, saying needless foreign medical tourism can be controlled with concerted efforts.

She also appreciated the Marengo Asia Hospital team for deeming it fit to transfer expertise to the Nigerian experts working in AMSH.

Dr. Rajiv Sood, Chairman of Urology & Renal Transplant at Marengo Asia Hospital and head of the foreign team, commended ABUAD for its state-of-the-art facilities and 24-hour operation which distinguish it from many public hospitals.

Sood, a leading expert in urology and renal transplant, highlighted the potential of the partnership to position ABUAD Multi-System Hospital as a center for medical tourism in Africa.
