A Non governmental Organisation, Triple Green Environmental Development Foundation, TGED Foundation organized a campaign tagged “ Walk Against Single Use Plastics” in commemoration of the EarthDay 2024 with the theme Planet Vs Plastics
The walk was to raise awareness and educate about the menace of plastic pollution and necessity of curbing single-use plastics. The event was in response to the single-use plastics menace hitting hard in our environment and the society.
The Chief Executive Officer of TGED Foundation, Ms Oluwaseyi Ebenezer said Plastic waste in Nigeria has undeniably been a leading source of pollution since the inception and use of plastic for packaging food and beverages.
” The rapid increase in its production and usage has become of significant concern and has contributed to the problem of waste disposal.
” Its effects cannot be overemphasized considering its environmental hazards such as clogging of water ways, release of chemicals into the soil, endangerment to animals living in and around water bodies.
” It has become imperative that proper actions be taken to manage plastic waste disposal, With more and more plastics being employed in human lives and increasing pressure being placed on capacities available for plastic waste disposal, the need for biodegradable plastics and biodegradation of plastic wastes has assumed increasing importance in the last few years.” She stressed
The Founder said one of such actions that can be taken is the discouragement of single use plastic in our society.
She stated that the theme of the Earth Day 2024 “planet versus plastics” highlighted the importance of proper disposal of plastic in our environment.
She also reiterated the importance of the reuse of plastic, reducing the use of plastic and war against single use plastic and also the recycling of plastic.
” Doing so, we can make our environment healthier and we can also protect our planet knowing that, plastics and non-degradable can stay for 1,000 years without decaying.
” Also, burning of plastic waste is very harmful by releasing toxic substances into the atmosphere.
” It is very imperative that we all stop the use of single use plastic and encourage reuse of plastic reduction of plastic and recycling of plastics.
The road walk, which spanned from Fajuyi to Okesha market and back in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State Nigeria, symbolized our commitment to taking tangible action towards a cleaner and healthier planet and it has become evident that the fight against single-use plastics and the promotion of recycling and reuse are causes worth rallying behind
Over a 100 young people joined by a number of community leaders, stakeholders, and security agencies [NESREA, NEMA, CORPERS, YALI Initiative, Leo Club, Peace Corps, NYCN, FELAD among others embarked on a peaceful walk against single-use plastics in Ado-Ekiti metropolis, Ekiti State.
People carried placards with inscriptions ‘ Enough is Enough to Single-Use Plastic Menace’, ‘ Save the planet earth’ ‘Stop burning plastics ‘ and so on.
