The Medical Women’s Association (MWAN), Ekiti State chapter has distributed sanitary pads to secondary school in Ekiti in commemoration of the World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023.
MWAN in collaboration with the Nigeria Medical Student Association, Technical Office on Maternal Health and Child Nutrition, organized an enlightening programme titled “PAD A Girl” at the Ekiti State Government College in Ado Ekiti.
The President of the Association, Dr Akinsoto Esther said MWAN is aiming at removing the myth around menstruation and sensitizing the concerned authorities in providing condusive environment ( sanitation and water) in schools. This will reduce absenteeism in schools during the menstruation days.
The students were exposed to a diverse range of topics which was delivered by the MWAN’S financial Secretary, a Consultant Gynaecologist , Dr Okunola Temitope, including menstrual health education, the proper use and disposal of sanitary pads, personal hygiene practices during menstruation, and the management of menstrual pain and discomfort.
Also, speaking at the event, the NiMSA Technical Officer on Maternal Health and Child Nutrition, Makanjuola Oluwakemi Esther said, ” It is quite important to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and ensure that girls have access to proper information and resources to maintain their health and well-being. Hence, the reason for this event.
This event will undoubtedly contribute to reducing the challenges faced by many young girls in managing their period.
In his response, the Principal of the college, Mr Eweje appreciated the associations for the visit and for deeming it fit to distribute and educate the students on personal hygiene during their periods.
In the same vein, a student, one of the beneficiaries, Bukola Ojo thanked the Medical Women’s Association for the gesture and enlightenment.
